Idea 2

IDEA 2: I came up with this idea in the last class (no research done yet), it was mentioned that Jeremy had suggested someone to do a projection-performance piece that showed dreams. I thought about this, and I liked the idea of having something non-physical/ non-substantial combined with a physical being. I thought about other non-physical “things” that could be used instead. Spirituality is a significant aspect of my life, and even though I don’t believe in any form of religion, I believe in spirits and am superstitious; so naturally I though of spirits/ghosts. I think it would be interesting to have a projection of life-sized figures on a wall fading in and out. Preferably, the projections would be in 3D, and people would have to wear 3D glasses to really experience the projections. I think it would be interesting because hypothetically spirits and people would (unknowingly to us) be present together, and so if people could “walk amongst” the spirits it could be an experience not only in the “presence” but also reactions. I like the playfulness of having something immaterial become somewhat material.

stereo photography gif experiments

Here are a couple of my first tests with creating a stereo gif.

I used photographs I had taken a while ago (not specifically framed for the purpose of a stereo gif) to see how it works and possible final outcomes.

Stereo Photography

So far in my research, I have been particularly drawn to photography and the various forms of manipulation that can be used in order to enhance an image and really make it come to life. Photography, just like film, is fascinating in its timeless ability to tell or reveal a story. 
I am always allured by the beauty of photographs from the past, as they reveal so much about people or settings in one snapshot. A photograph is essentially a vessel of the past, revealing moments from our pasts or history that allow us to reminisce on, or learn about.

I am also really interested in the ways photographic images can be digitally manipulated to enhance its effect, particularly the ways in which gifs can be created in order to form an animation. To me, gifs are a hybridisation of photographs and films. Animated images exaggerate the telling of a story by bringing life to a previous 2D photograph. To further narrow this down, I am really fascinated by the concept of "stereo photography", which is essentially two 2D photographs layered into a gif. I really loved the music video that Jeremy showed in class for Kirin Callinan's "Way to War", which is composed entirely of photographs that have been layered into animated form (gif?) in order to create a 3D materiality to the images.

Word image manipulation

So i have continued using Microsoft Word to digitally manipulate images as you can see below:
As you've probably noticed i've printed and re-scanned them in - i like the faded quality, and i havent yet been able to save the images i create on Word in high quality formats. They're usually very small.

Over the next few days im hoping to address issues such as the flatness of the images, i would like an extra layer of depth and will do so using my scanner

Photos of Paint on Popped Balloons by Fabian Oefner

Liquid Jewel is a new project by Swiss photographer Fabian Oefner (previously) as part of his ongoing exploration of manipulating paint with natural forces such as sound, centrifugal force, and even magnetism. In these new images the photographer turned his attention toward air pressure by harnessing the power of the popped balloon. Oefner covered modeling balloons in thick layers of acrylic paint and photographed each one milliseconds after popping it with a needle.
